Reading
Strengthen early readers phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, fluency and oral language comprehension in grades k through 2 through word play, blended phonemes, vowel activities, decoding using sound-by-sound blending, oral close reading, and timed fluent reading.
Strengthen readers in grades 3 to 5’s understanding and use of vocabulary through repeated exposure, vocabulary in rich context, and restructuring vocabulary task to help scholars learn new words.
Written Responses
Scholars will use a structured, content- based approach to all writing assignments and task, for example, writing prompts or the writing genres. They will engage in depth analysis of text. Scholars including ELLs/MLLs and SWD will use supports and scaffolds accordingly to help them plan, discuss and organize their ideas and develop opinions; incorporate and connect their words and sentences; and/ or move from notes to developed paragraphs. 23-24SY: Students writing across all content areas. Focusing on the writing process and engaging in developing their ideas through the writing genres with the HMH curriculum. Short responses using IDD and extended responses using RAFT.
Math
Strengthen conceptual understanding through a laser focus on math fluency, verbalization of mathematical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Think: Balanced Math Block
20-24SY: School wide 3 Reads and UPSC, all scholars engaging in math discussions using explaining their thinking & critiquing evidence of MP4. , matching task with learning goals and instructional strategies, anticipating scholar’s responses and appropriate teacher directed instructional next steps, monitoring scholar’s responses by focusing on their thinking.
